Fungal Toenails

Overview

Fungal toenails (medically known as onychomycosis) is a condition where the toenails are infected by fungus. It commonly begins as a white or yellow-brown spot under the toenail. As the fungal infection goes deeper, the nail may discolour, thicken and crumble at the edge. This can affect several nails.

Nail fungus can cause discomfort and can spread. Treatment for nail fungus at Podiatry Quest involves sound education on self-care techniques, topical medication, and PACT UV fungal therapy.

About Fungal Toenails

Causes and Symptoms:

A fungal nail infection occurs when there is an overgrowth of fungi within, beneath, or on the nail. Fungi tend to flourish in warm, damp settings. This infection develops when fungi infiltrate nails that have been damaged by tight shoes, trauma, or sport.

Symptoms of a fungal nail infection are:

  • Thickened, stained and discoloured nails
  • Brittle, crumby or ragged nail edges
  • White or yellow streaks
  • Detached nails

As a result of this, a fungal nail infection may cause discomfort and an unpleasant appearance. Nail fungus can spread from one toenail to another, as well as from person to person.

Risk factors

Factors that increase your risk of developing nail fungus include:

  • Older age
  • Having feet that sweat heavily
  • Walking barefoot in damp public areas, such as swimming pools, gyms and shower rooms
  • Sustaining injury to the nail
  • Having diabetes or a weakened immune system

How We Help

To prevent fungal toenails, it is recommended that you:

  • Keep your nails clean and dry. Wash your feet with soap thoroughly and regularly. Wash your hands after touching an infected nail.
  • Wear breathable, absorbent socks. Wash socks in hot water and dry in direct sunlight
  • Dry and air shoes regularly
  • Wear footwear in common areas

At Podiatry Quest, treatment of fungal toenails include:

  • Trimming and thinning nails to remove as much of the fungi affected areas as possible. This will allow better penetration of the anti-fungal treatment.
  • Topical anti-fungal treatment prescription to treat the affected nail and prevent spreading to other nails.
  • PACT UV therapy. Photodyamic Antimicrobial Therapy a UV sensitive gel and UV light to target and destroy active fungal spores. It is pain-free and has no reported side effects.
